Hi, my name is Roosevelt and welcome to my channel. Today, I will talk about how to get yourself out of depression and be genuinely happy with yourself. Perhaps, you are not happy because you feel that you are not good enough, people find you ugly, you don’t have any friends or you might feel anxious because of stress or due to bad experiences like bullying or abuse. But despite all that, it’s actually possible for you to get yourself out of depression and be really happy and positive all the time. But when I say, all the time, I am not saying you ignore bad experiences but I am suggesting that you don’t let these bad experiences change who you want to be or let those negative things affect your own self-respect and happiness. So, let’s explore some the things you can do to be very happy!
First, let’s go over some misconceptions. You might feel that depression is not under your control or you need to rely on medicine to cure your depression. But the fact is, drugs can merely reduce some of your symptoms or help you sleep better but only you can cure your own depression and increase your own happiness. In some cases if you do have genetic disorder or something is physically wrong with your brain or body, then it can affect your hormones, your mood and cause other symptoms of depression. If you suspect that is the case then you should talk to a doctor and make sure your health and brain is in top shape before you start applying some of the strategies. And in most cases, you are probably very healthy physically. And you you just need to change a few habits or your perspective on things to feel happier.
So, how do you get out of depression. The very first thing you have to get control of are your own thoughts. If you always have negative thoughts and always think of or see yourself as the victim, more your brain will try to create such images or it will blow any small things way out of proportion. And the best way I found to get rid of negative thoughts is to write them down. As soon as you start feeling anxious, sad, depressed or start to see that you are not feeling good, write down or type up exactly what’s on your mind. The very act of writing out the negative things frees up your mind and sometimes we just need to get all these things out of our head to decrease all the pressure we build up. If you do this early in the morning or before you go to bed, you will find yourself becoming more calm and focused.
Next, you want to make sure your social group is supportive and you actually like them. You must get this right. Because I am a strong believer that who you hang out with is who you become. If your friends are depressed, sad or negative all the time, then you will become just like them. If your family members are the same way then it might be a bit harder to get away but in such cases you could try to change your environment or decrease the amount of time you spend with them. The goal is to surround yourself with people who are happy with themselves and can lift you up or at least understand your deep desires or goals. If your friends don’t understand you or you can’t express yourself fully around them, then they are not really your friends. You might find yourself being alone but understand that it’s better to be with one positive person than a pack full of negative people who may not like you to begin with.
Then, you want to see yourself from a fresh perspective. Chances are you have already done a lot in your life and you have plenty of things to feel good about. Perhaps, you have an awesome job, perhaps you already raised two wonderful kids, perhaps you got an awesome scholarship in college, perhaps you were the prom king, maybe you created businesses at an early age or perhaps you are really good with musical instruments or maybe you are really good at singing or dancing. These things are awesome and you should be proud of them. So, take a moment and really think or write down all the positive things you accomplished so far in your life. Notice how you accomplished them, who helped you, how did you help someone, how happy you made someone else and really acknowledge how far you have come! These things will greatly help you remind yourself, how awesome and capable you are. And I am willing to bet, if you do this every week or just review whatever you come up with, you will start to feel better about yourself!
Then, the other important thing you can do is bring some changes to your diet and daily routine. There’s no doubt that the type of food we eat and the amount of exercise we get daily greatly affects our mood and overall health. If you want to get out of depression quickly, and be happier, the quickest way would be to make sure you are eating foods that gives you more energy and also lowers stress or other symptoms. So, make sure you eat lots of fruits, vegetables and lower your carbs. And the other thing that goes hand in hand with your diet is exercise and sleep. I cannot stress this enough. You have to daily go for a walk or do some kind of exercise whether it’s cardio or going to the gym, you have to do it to maintain a healthy heart rate and thus keep your mind and body functioning at an optimal level. The other important thing is sleep. Do not overlook this. If you need to sleep 8 hrs, 9 hr or 10 hrs, get that full amount. Don’t worry about what others might say or think, you know your body better and you know how much sleep you need. So, don’t deprive yourself.
Finally, start planning for your next day each night. If you want to take each day as it comes and don’t have any specific goal with your life, it will render you lonely or make you feel that you don’t have any purpose. But a goal to do anything whether it’s something simple as painting your home, gives you a sense of purpose and keeps your mind occupied with thoughts related to whatever goal you are trying to accomplish. It’s totally fine to live your day as it comes but if it’s leaving you depressed and unhappy, then you need to try something new. So, daily journal about your day, write down what was great about today and if you had any negative experiences, write down what you can do better to deal with that kind of issues in future. Your daily habit of journaling and setting goals will keep you focused and help you steer your life in any direction you want. So, I hope you will take your life to a happier and a much positive direction.
